Warsaw Jewish Heritage Tour

95,00

Warsaw. Jewish Cemetery. One of the largest Jewish cemeteries in the world with an area of over 33 hectares. Began to bury there the dead since 1806 and it was originally intended only for the rich Jews. Over time, become available to all. At the beginning of the twentieth century – in order to avoid the eternal disputes between Orthodox Jews and progressive Jews – the cemetery was divided into 4 main parts: orthodox, progressive, child and ordinal – introducing further division in the part of the orthodox quarters for male and female. After the war, added military and ghetto quarters. Among the alleys you can find the grave of Jakub Lejkin, collaborator and head of the Jewish police in the ghetto, which, because of a special brutality, was shot dead by militants of the Jewish Fighting Organization. And next to it is the grave of Adam Czerniakow, president of the Jewish Community in the Ghetto, who committed suicide, refusing to signing with his own name notice on the deportation of Jews to Treblinka. Death is an unpleasant formality, but it takes up all the candidates (Paul Claudel).
